Sam Smith's debut album shoots to No. 1 on UK chart

Sam Smith’s premiere album has debuted at No. 1 on the UK chart.

The BRITs Critics’ Choice artist has soared to the top spot with ‘In The Lonely Hour’ which contains his chart-topping hits ‘Money On My Mind’ and last week’s No. 1 single ‘Stay With Me’.

‘In The Lonely Hour’ is also the fastest-selling debut album of the year with first week sales amounting to 101,000 copies.

Last week’s No. 1 album, ‘Ghost Stories’ by Coldplay, has now slipped to No. 2.

The rest of this week’s top five is completed by Paolo Nutini with ‘Caustic Love’ up three to No. 3, Paloma Faith’s ‘A Perfect Contradiction’ is a non-mover at No. 4, and Michael Jackson’s posthumous ‘Xscape’ slips three to No. 5.

New entries to the rest of this week’s album chart come from Mariah Carey with ‘Me. I Am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse’, her fourteenth LP, debuting at No. 14, Neil Young’s ‘A Letter Home’ at No. 17, ‘Do It Again’ by Royskopp and Robyn at No. 20, Peter Andre’s ‘Big Night’ at No. 23, Sharon Van Etten’s ‘Are We There’ at No. 27, Bury Tomorrow’s ‘Runes’ at No. 34, Echo & The Bunnymen’s ‘Meteorites’ at No. 37 and Life Worship’s ‘Dance Again’ at No. 38.
