Sir Elton John to guest edit The Independent

Staff of the UK’s Independent newspaper have revealed that Sir Elton John will be taking the reins of their head offices for a special World Aids Day edition of the paper.

The role will give the superstar the chance to commission news, features and commentary relating to World Aids Day to raise awareness of HIV and all the circulation revenues from the special edition will go towards Elton’s Aids Foundation.

The singer, who will be taking the job on a break from touring with Leon Russell, said: "I was thrilled to be invited to guest edit The Independent. I'm really looking forward to spending a day in the editor's chair, and I'm pleased to get the chance to put the subject of Aids at the top of the editorial agenda."

Elton is not the first to be The Independent’s king-for-a-day as U2’s Bono edited an iconic (RED) issue in 2006, raising money to help fight Aids in Africa.
