Led Zeppelin stars face 'Stairway to Heaven' plagiarism trial

Led Zeppelin's Robert Plant and Jimmy Page are set to face trial over allegations that part of their classic track 'Stairway to Heaven' was copied.

Michael Skidmore, a trustee for the late Spirit guitarist Randy Wolfe, has launched legal action against the 1971 song.

He claims the song's iconic intro and verse ripped off Spirit's instrumental track 'Taurus'.

The two bands toured together in the 1960s and it is alleged Led Zeppelin copied parts of the song after hearing it live.

Los Angeles district judge Gary Klausner has ruled there is enough similarity between the two songs to move the matter to a copyright trial on May 10.

He said: "While it is true that a descending chromatic four-chord progression is a common convention that abounds in the music industry, the similarities here transcend this core structure.

"What remains is a subjective assessment of the 'concept and feel' of two works...a task no more suitable for a judge than for a jury."
