Michael Jackson statue angers Fulham FC fans

A statue of the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson, is due to be unveiled in London tomorrow (April 3), but it's causing something of an outrage amongst Fulham FC fans.

The tribute, which The Guardian describes as a "six-foot high golden statue", will be presented to the public outside the football club's Craven Cottage stadium before a Premier League game is held there later that afternoon.

Jackson was famously invited to enjoy a match at the venue by Mohamed Al Fayed, who is Fulham's chairman and owner, back in 1999, but fans of the team are planning a protest. David Lloyd, editor of Fulham FC's fanzine, explained "the whole thing is bizarre", and said:

"If I was asked: did I want it? I would say no. But we've got a chairman who has done so much for us if he wants a Michael Jackson statue, so be it. What we don't want is the ridicule that will come with it."

Despite Jackson's lack of personal connections to the game of football or team itself, Fayed used the team's website to reveal the news, stating:

"Michael Jackson was truly a legend, a term used too often in this modern world,"

"I hope that Fulham fans will appreciate seeing the finest performer in the world in and among them."
