Earlier in the week, Kelis announced on her Twitter page that she was victim to racist abuse from a British man after her Bestival appearance. 

Initially, it was believed that the abuse happened in London but she has since clarified that the incident actually happened in Spain, following a flight from Gatwick.

Kelis' story reached Mayor Boris Johnson and he sent her this response via Twitter:

"Heard about the treatment you received at a UK airport. Want you to know this is not typical. I’m appalled & I’m on the case"

Although the American singer has now specified that it didn't happen in London, staff at City Hall have said that it still highlights the issue of racism within the UK.
