Etta James's son speaks about his mother's last moments

Etta James's son Donto has spoken of how his mother passed away in his arms in what he called a very "spiritual" moment.

Speaking on the day of his mother's death (January 20), Donto James told People that her family were by her side when she passed away.

He added that he took time to tell Etta, who was unable to speak, how well she had she had performed as a mother. He said:

"It's been quite a day, but I'm very grateful. She basically passed in my arms, and I was able to share everything I needed to say to her, from praying to listing her accomplishments as a mother. I asked her if she heard what I said, and she'd flutter her eyes and look at me very quickly. And she had been nonreactive before that."

He added: "I told her that I loved her. I said, 'You were a wonderful mother, you did a wonderful job, your seven grandchildren love you, and they will be okay."

The music world have been paying tributes to Etta James since the news of her death emerged, with the likes of Beyoncé calling her one of the greatest singers of our time.
