X Factor 2012 contestants able to perform own material

X Factor contestants will be able to play their own songs on the new series.

The popular TV talent show is hitting screens in the UK once again from Saturday (August 18) as the country's wannabe singers try to make it big.

The show has often been criticised in the past for evoking a karaoke feel, but producers have confirmed that this year performers will be allowed to play their own music.

Another change for the 2012 series meanwhile sees the 'Overs' category upping its age limit from 25 to 28.

As previously reported, comic Harry Hill has revealed plans to produce an X Factor musical next year, with Simon Cowell approving the project.
