Music icon Prince is set to receive a special award at the Billboard Music Awards in May.

The 'Raspberry Beret' superstar will be given the Billboard Icon Award at the Las Vegas ceremony on May 19 and he will also perform at the event, which is due to be broadcast live on ABC from the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Stevie Wonder was last year's recipient and he also received a tribute led by 'Girl On Fire' songstress Alicia Keys.

Billboard added that other acts will be recognised at the awards ceremony, confirming "top artists will be recognized in a variety of genres, including R&B, Rap, Pop, Country, Rock, Latin and Alternative."
