Rihanna was originally intended to appear on fun.'s hit track 'We Are Young', it has been revealed.

The song, which comes off their 2012 record 'Some Nights', features a cameo from Janelle Monae.

It became one of the hit songs of the year and recently won the Song of the Year 2013 Grammy.

Speaking to MTV, producer Jeff Bhasker said that Rihanna was the number one target to sing on the track - but she never replied to their invitation. He said:

"Gun. said, 'Who can we get?' And I said, 'Let's get Rihanna'. We were shooting for the stars on everything and she was kind of a muse. Someone tried to reach out and I know she heard the song and liked it. But I think some wires just got crossed."

Fun. meanwhile also won the Best New Artist gong at the Grammys, which took place on Sunday (February 10).
