Ricky Gervais defends Justin Bieber over Anne Frank comment

Last week, teen sensation Justin Bieber angered members of the public by writing a message in the guestbook at Anne Frank's House and museum, in which he said he hoped she 'would have been a Belieber'.

His comment infuriated many people and he came under fire for the remark, but British funnyman Ricky Gervais has now spoken out about the incident and suggested that the 'Boyfriend' superstar probably didn't realise the implications of his message:

"On a serious note: I think we should remember that Bieber wasn't being nasty. He's a prat, but not evil. Just a bit gimp."

When the news of Bieber's guestbook comment first broke, Gervais took to his official Twitter page and mocked him by posting: "I agree with Justin Bieber. Anne Frank would've loved his stuff. It's perfect for being played really really quietly so no one can hear it."

A spokesperson from the Anne Frank museum in Holland has also shown support for the superstar, confirming that he was genuinely interested in her history during his visit: "His comments were quite innocent. He was here for more than hour and interested in Anne Frank's life, and that for us is the most important thing."
