5SOS on YouTube: 'People at home thought we were lame so it gave us an audience'

5 Seconds Of Summer are currently enjoying international fame but revealed they had to kickstart their career using the Internet because they couldn't get a strong enough fan base in the area they grew up.

The lads recently opened up in an interview with GRAMMY.com about starting out on YouTube and drummer Ashton Irwin explained that it was a way to reach a new audience because people in their hometown thought they were 'super lame':

"Where we're from, YouTube was the only way to get recognition for our music because everyone was like, 'you're a pop-rock band and you're super lame, we don't want to see that'. It's either... you like rap or you like metal, there was no in between."

In the same interview, Irwin also spoke about building a fan base through the video hosting site and explained they had to try and transform an online audience into one that would come to see them live:

"We were building a fan base but we sort of wanted to be like a live band known for our live performances. So that was the biggest job - transferring a YouTube audience to people who [will] actually come down to [our] show."
