Adam Levine on Maroon 5 'boyband' label: 'It was so weird'

Singer Adam Levine, of Maroon 5 fame, has spoken out about the group's early label as a boyband and admitted that he never felt as though the group really fit the stereotype well.

Speaking to the BBC, the 'Maps' star explained that he never understood why people pigeon-holed Maroon 5 as a boyband because that definition, to him, was more 'sparkly' and less instruments and songwriting:

"It's weird because, to me, the thing that made a boyband a boyband was they didn't play any instruments and they choreographed their dance moves. If you don't do that, you're not a boyband. Even Hanson - they're a band. They were young, but they were just dudes who played in a band. A boyband is the headsets and the sparkly stuff and all those things."

Levine also recently spoke to People magazine about the effects of fame and confessed that it really makes you confront your vices

"This guy was me at a certain point. He's about to be lost and is losing it. Granted, it wasn't the same experience. But all of a sudden you have much more at your disposal - girls, money, alcohol, whatever. Your vices become magnified. You get to the edge of a cliff, and if you jump off you're screwed. I've been so blessed. Thank God for my family and friends who supported me."
