Earlier this week, the 'One Thing' heartthrobs teased fans by promising to tell them some exciting news "in a few days" and they have now confirmed the announcement will be made on August 23.

Writing on his official Twitter page this afternoon, member Niall Horan explained that the wait is almost over and his followers should be ready for an update tomorrow night:

"Guys as you know we've been in studio a lot lately...Big announcement coming Thursday night! Can't wait to tell you all!"

Following Horan's tweet, a message was posted to the group's official Facebook page explaining that the announcement has now been moved forward to 1pm UK time.

One Direction have been hard at work in the studio (pictured below) preparing their forthcoming new album and have spent the past few weeks doing promotional photo shoots for it.

Liam Payne tweeted today (August 22) that they have just finished yet another project: "3rd photo shoot in a row , im all cameraerrdd outttt :)"

Meanwhile, an update has been sent from the group's own Twitter account that told fans to "stay tuned" for a glimpse of what the superstars have been doing for the past few hours: "We're really excited about what the boys are doing today! Stay tuned and you just might get a sneak peek! 1DHQ x"
