Pharrell Williams reveals confusion over arrest of Iranian fans

Pharrell Williams has commented on the recent arrest of some of his fans in Iran.

Fans across the world have filmed themselves dancing along to his hit track 'Happy' and some of his followers recently got in on the action in Tehran, Iran.

However, they were subsequently arrested for hurting "public chastity" and being too "vulgar".

Williams initially spoke out in support of the fans on Facebook and he has now told Capital FM that the song merely represents people's right to be happy.

He said: "I'm a not a super-political person, I'm not an activist. But when I feel something, I feel the need to react. I probably don't react like 99% of the time because I do find a lot of comfort in being reserved. But that was something where we had to say something.

"Every living, breathing human being reserves their innate liberty to be happy whenever they want. The song was only there to remind and suggest that 'Happy' is a perception that is attainable by all. Those people deserve that. To be happy, that is."

Williams added that whilst he totally respects other religion's laws and rules, he isn't sure why a video like that caused trouble.

He said: "I didn't see anything that would suggest that it would be influential in a negative way."
