Singer-and-actress Selena Gomez can always count on her mother to "push [her]" talents.

The 21-year-old beauty has been expanding her CV of late - starring in bold movie projects such as Spring Breakers and Getaway.

The roles are a daring departure from her Disney days, but Gomez insists she has the support from her family.

Speaking to British magazine OK! Gomez explained: "You have different people who come into your life and they affect you and leave an impact on you. Whether it's projects, friends or directors, it's just an opportunity that people give me, which I love. My mom definitely pushes me to do better."

Gomez stars in new thriller Getaway alongside actor Ethan Hawke. The songstress says the Hollywood actor was a joy to work with - not least because she could always count on him to lend a helping hand.

She smiled: "We would always go to McDonald's - well, I would at least, that was our thing. He was really nice, and when I got tired and stressed he would definitely cheer me up."
