Coldplay perform surprise benefit in Manhattan for New York homeless shelter

'Fix You' hitmakers Coldplay recently performed an impromptu benefit gig at Manhattan's Mercury Lounge.

The band paid a visit to The Bowery Mission, which is an organisation that helps to clothe, feed and shelter people without permanent residences, and announced the concert earlier the same day. Tickets sold out very quickly and Coldplay managed to raise an impressive $4,300 (£3,510) for the worthy charity.

James Macklin from The Bowery Mission's Director of Outreach joined the band's frontman, Chris Martin, on stage and afterwards issued a statement to Time magazine: "Chris Martin proved once again the power of one person to make a difference through The Bowery Mission, As the temperatures drop and we serve thousands of lonely people during the holidays, Chris has lifted our spirits today."

Earlier this month, Chris Martin told Australia Today that that his mother got him into the habit of donating 10% of his earnings to charity every month, which is something he has continued to do over the years.
