David Bowie has topped the US albums chart for the first time

David Bowie is No.1 on the US albums chart for the first time.

The musician passed away on January 10 aged 69 after a secret battle with cancer.

His death came only two days after the release of his 25th album 'Blackstar'.

Billboard have now confirmed that the record has debuted at No.1 on their albums chart.

It sold a total of 181,000 units in its first week on sale.

Bowie also has a total of nine albums in the Billboard 200 chart.

Compilation 'Best of Bowie' is in at No.4, while 'The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars' is No.21.

The last act to have two albums in the US top five was Adele in 2011.

Bowie meanwhile last week had 25 per cent of the albums in the UK top 40.
