Ellie Goulding and Bruno Mars among first BRITs 2014 winners

Tonight is the 2014 BRIT Awards, which is currently being held at London's O2 Arena, and the first winners of the evening have now been announced.

Vocal sensation Ellie Goulding, who is nominated for a handful of prizes, picked up British Female Solo Artist and was visibly overcome with emotion after telling the press earlier today that she didn't expect to be successful at the ceremony because she was up against such impressive artists

Bruno Mars, who performed a rousing rendition of 'Treasure' at the event, then won International Male Solo Artist, beating the likes of Drake and Justin Timberlake, and told the crowd that it was "an honour to be in this category" among such huge stars.

'Pompeii' hitmakers Bastille took home the British Breakthrough Act title and during their acceptance speech admitted that they couldn't believe it: "Wow, this is entirely unexpected for all of us. We'd like to thank Radio 1 especially... and Radio 1 listeners. This time last year I don’t think anyone in this room let alone us thought we’d be here!"

Arctic Monkeys have since won Best British Group, taking the title over One Direction and they joked about triumphing over the boyband: "That's the £15 we put on One Direction to win down the drain, isn't it?!"
