Prince symbol removed from Michael Jackson album cover

The cover for Michael Jackson’s upcoming album has been amended after representatives for Prince demanded that the singer’s famous symbol be removed from the artwork.

The symbol was once legally Prince’s name, leading confused press to dub him ‘The Artist Formally Known as Prince’. The superstar has since reverted back to his original stage name, but the symbol is still owned by him.

The symbol made an appearance in the original artwork for the MJ cover, which, according to designer Kadir Nelson, features a collage of “key moments and important people in Michael Jackson’s life”.

However, the Prince homage has since been removed. According to a statement from the ‘Purple Rain’ singer’s representative stated “No permission was granted. Sony Entertainment has removed the symbol”.

The new album, 'Michael', will be released December 14.
