Earlier today (July 27) people filled London's Hyde Park for a special concert to mark the beginning of the 2012 Olympic Games.

Performances came from the likes of Duran Duran, Stereophonics and Paolo Nutini and they played to a 50,000 strong crowd.

Speaking to the BBC, Duran Duran's frontman Simon Le Bon explained that it was an incredible opportunity and said it was "the biggest show we've ever played in London town". Band member John Taylor added: "We feel very English. But we feel British too, so we're in the right place."

Nick Rhodes, also of the 'Hungry Like The Wolf' outfit, said: "It's the last day of the European tour and it's the first day of the Olympics. What more could you ask for?"

Snow Patrol were also in attendance to represent Northern Ireland and singer Gary Lightbody told the BBC: "It's the only thing I'll ever represent Northern Ireland at. My 100 metre sprinting days are long past me."

"We were asked to represent our country, we're never going to say no to that. The world is looking in on our nations and you've got to stand up for that."
