Olympic Closing Ceremony enjoys 26.2m UK peak audience as acts' sales surge

The London 2012 Closing Ceremony enjoyed a massive peak audience of 26.2 million viewers in the UK.

The ceremony, which was held last night (August 12) at London's Olympic Stadium, saw British stars such as One Direction, Jessie J and a reformed Spice Girls take to the stage.

The event saw a peak audience in the UK of 26.2 million, with the viewing figures not once dropping below 20 million.

The talent on show meanwhile have been enjoying a surge in sales, with a number of acts - such as Elbow - rising up the UK iTunes chart.

HMV's head of Press and PR Gennaro Castaldo said that they expect to see sales bumps for the likes of the Spice Girls and John Lennon in particular. He said:

"With British music at the heart of the Closing Ceremony it's likely we'll see another surge in album sales of many of the featured artists. We won't fully know who the big winners are 'til later in the week, but based on initial fan reaction and downloads we're seeing a great deal of interest in John Lennon, the Spice Girls, Emeli Sande, Elbow, Queen, Kate Bush, George Michael and The Who to name a few."
