Alicia Keys: "Family provide musical mandate"

Alicia Keys says her husband and son make her feel "less contained" about life, which has allowed her to be more open and creative with her music.

The songstress is married to producer and DJ Swizz Beatz and the musical pair have two-year-old son Egypt together.

Keys is currently promoting her fifth studio album Girl on Fire, and says her family have made her feel "less contained and much more open" about life - especially when it came to putting pen to paper for the new record.

The star added to Billboard magazine: "It was a very eased-in process that helped me realise one thing. I just wanted to craft great songs and create emotion with incredible songwriting talents. That was the mandate."

Keys is proud of her new album and has revealed the inspiration behind the deep lyrics and soulful beats.

She added: "This is me stepping into my complete womanhood, my journey to becoming fearless."
