Pharrell Williams' 'Happy' becomes most downloaded song in UK ever

Pharrell Williams' hit track 'Happy' has become the most downloaded song in the UK of all time.

The singer originally released the song back in 2013 and it enjoyed a number of weeks at the top of the UK singles chart.

The Official Charts Company have now confirmed that the track has shifted 1.68 million copies in the country so far, making it the most popular download ever in the UK.

The tune was released in June last year as part of the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack before it featured on Williams' 2014 album 'G I R L'.

The singer and musician commented: "I would just like to say thank you, first and foremost, to the people, because the charts are determined by them. I have a lot to be thankful for because they’ve chosen these things and it’s resulted in 'Happy' being what it’s become.

"The people of the UK have been so supportive of me over the years, allowing me to be an artist and allowing me to work with other people and supporting what it is that I do. That’s the lifeline, without them you’re just a musician with a couple of ideas but with them, that is the thing that changes everything when they get involved, your little idea can become something, so...thank you!"

'Happy' overtakes the previous record holder - 'Blurred Lines' by Robin Thicke - which also features Williams.

The track has sold 1.59 million downloads to date.
