Katy Perry sent John Mayer love letters during their 'long courtship'

'Wide Awake' beauty Katy Perry has revealed that before she went public with her John Mayer romance, they would write affectionate letters to each other and this act inspired a song on her new album.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the superstar explained that they had an extensive "courtship" before deciding to become a couple and it helped them to become closer:

"I actually wrote it in an email one time, and after I wrote it I looked -- we had a long courtship before anything was [public], just writing letters to each other -- and seeing 'legendary lovers,' it sounded so nice. Some things float into my mind, and I process them, and [then] I make songs about them."

'Legendary Lovers' features on the tracklisting of her chart-topping new album, 'Prism'.

Earlier this month, Perry confessed that it's great to date someone with the same career path as her because it means they understand where the other one is coming from when they have worries or problems: "There's a lot of understanding when you get home and say, 'Ah, I had a pretty crappy show'. [John's] like, 'I understand because I've had one, too'. You get to share music. The dance parties are a lot more fun."
