Blue's Duncan James: 'Until I was in a band I didn't realise it was OK to be gay'

Singer Duncan James, who found fame with British boyband Blue, has opened up about his relationship with a male dancer that was going on while the group were at their peak.

Although James came out as bisexual in 2009, he explained on last night's (March 21) episode of The Big Reunion that he felt as though he had to keep his affections for one of their backing dancers a secret:

"Being brought up as a strict Catholic, the whole gay thing in my head was bad and wrong. It wasn't until I was in the band, being around other gay guys, [that I understood] that actually you can be gay. It's alright to like other guys."

"I actually really liked him and I couldn't tell anybody. I used to ring him up paranoid, "Have you told anybody? Have you told anybody?" and he'd be like, "I'm not going to tell anybody, I promise you."'

The 'All Rise' hitmaker added that eventually their affair came to an end because he didn't know how to deal with his sexuality in the public domain: "I broke his heart to the point where he couldn't be with me in that way any more and ended it. I wanted to still be kind of known as "Duncan James from Blue, the heartthrob". If anybody ever used to say anything about me - "I think he's gay" - I would get this panic inside me."
