Museum launches campaign to stop Kelly Clarkson buying Jane Austen ring

A museum is hoping to raise money to buy a ring that was once owned by Jane Austen instead of Kelly Clarkson.

The US singer had previously successfully bid at auction for a turquoise and gold ring at a price of £152,450 after Jane Austen's House Museum failed to raise enough money to buy the item.

However, UK culture minister Ed Vaizey placed a temporary ban on Clarkson taking the ring to America, believing that the ring should stay in Britain because of its cultural heritage.

Jane Austen's House Museum has now launched a campaign to raise money in an attempt to match Clarkson's bid and hopefully purchase the item.

The Hampshire museum has until the end of September "to show a serious expression of interest to buy the ring".
