Singer-songwriter and musician Shawn Mendes has opened up about the new tattoo that graces his forearm and revealed what it means to him.

Speaking to The Canadian Press recently, the 'Stitches' sensation admitted that he chose the design for very personal reasons: "The thought behind the tattoo is from the city to home — where I'm working (in Toronto) to home (in Pickering, Ont.).

It was then suggested that the design looks as though it features a soundwave, to which he replied:

"It's actually a custom sound wave of my parents and my sister saying "I love you." They recorded it. So (the tattoo illustrates that) I'm always connected to my parents and my sister. There's quite a bit of meaning in it. It's been a year now thinking about it. Last year I came up with the idea."

As previously reported, Mendes was featured in Forbes magazine's 30 Under 30: Music list along with the likes of Jason Derulo, Selena Gomez, Nick Jonas and Demi Lovato.
