All we know about Shawn Mendes' new album 'Illuminate' so far

Canadian singer Shawn Mendes has revealed details of his highly anticipated new studio album, entitled 'Illuminate'.

He will release the record on September 23 and recently told The Canadian Press that it'll be "more soulful": "The album is pretty much finished now. The new single "Treat You Better" is great, but that's just a little taste of where all the new music is going."

"That one is the poppiest song. (The album) is going to be more a soulful vibe — a lot more electric guitar-based. I think it's going to do damage in a good way."

On July 6, Mendes shared a tweet that confirmed a surprise is coming today. He wrote: "#IlluminateSept23 & tomorrow morning have one more massive surprise."

Billboard reports that on September 10, Mendes is scheduled to headline New York City's Madison Square Garden and will treat fans in attendance to a preview of the album.

As previously reported, he told ET Canada that he "gets goosebumps" just thinking about his new material: "I would say the actual new song is more on the poppier side of the album... I'm so excited about it, even the next couple of singles coming up, I get goosebumps just thinking about it and, like, where the future's headed. As an artist and a creator of music, I'm very proud of my work. I'm very picky."

In April, he told BBC Radio 1 that the album will be "a game-changer": "It's going to be soon - definitely soon. We're just finishing it off, honestly. It's very nearly done. I'm very excited... it's a game-changing album. Honestly, I've never felt so proud of something in my life. It's totally, for me, the experience making it in the studio this time around was life-changing."

"I really got to link up with the perfect people. Jake Gosling, who worked on some of the Ed (Sheeran) records... like, 'Thinking Out Loud', and he's phenomenal. We spent a few weeks up in upstate New York. It's working so well. We write the songs, they're being produced... to make it feel easy, it's such a good feeling."
