Kaiser Chiefs on modern music, One Direction and the Olympics

Brit-rockers Kaiser Chiefs performed at last night's (August 12) Olympic Closing Ceremony and have opened up about the event, revealing their nerves and what they think of newer acts like One Direction.

The band's guitarist, Simon, spoke to Yahoo! OMG recently and explained that it's hard for them to have a constructive opinion on modern pop acts because they're quite removed from that scene, and when asked what they think of the 'One Thing' heartthrobs, he said:

"I am a 34-year-old male in a guitar band and so I think a lot of the new music is not really aimed at me. I like going to see little gigs in dodgy venues, and there's still a few good new guitar bands out there, even if no-one is listening."

He then admitted that he feels as though the growth of social media and online outlets for music has devalued it somewhat: "When we started there was no Facebook or Twitter. iTunes was absolutely tiny and the first iPods were being suspiciously prodded."

"I love technology and am sat in my hotel room with a laptop and iPad and iPhone and probably some other bits so I can't really complain too much. But I think music has been gradually devalued. People think more and more it's something they should get for free and can get it so why should they pay."

Frontman Ricky Wilson also told the BBC that his Closing Ceremony performance (pictured below) made him very nervous: "Well, it is terrifying. It's not just the 80,000 people in the stadium and all your Olympic medal winners, but also the billions of people at home watching on TV."
